Where Has Dr. Souther Been?

We mentioned on our Facebook page that we would reveal where Dr. Souther has been. As you know, we recently welcomed her to our practice. Just as she got settled into our offices though, we sent her on the road to attend dental training seminars in Las Vegas and Jacksonville. Find out more about her travels here.

We strive to keep up to date on the latest technology and techniques in dentistry so we can provide cutting-edge dental care for our patients. Dr. Souther was happy to take the opportunity, and we look forward to sharing what she has learned with you at your next visit.

First stop, Dr. Souther attended the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, the world’s premier post-graduate dental education center, where she spent her time training on advanced dentistry techniques. Exciting and rewarding were the two words Dr. Souther used to describe her experience at LVI. What stood out the most was the deep dive into advanced understanding of sleep apnea and how we as dentists can help those who suffer with sleep disorders. It’s remarkable how we can help improve the lives of patients, and we only know how to do this by staying on top of current treatments.

Next stop, the American Academy of Facial Esthetics in Jacksonville. What does facial esthetics have to do with dentistry, you ask? Quite a lot! They complement cosmetic dental treatments and help treat temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and migraine symptoms. For example, Botox has a clinical use, such as retraining facial muscles affected by dental problems. Dr. Souther couldn’t be more excited to provide patients with an added level of service and expertise that she gained from this course.

At Dentistry by Angela Britt, we regularly invest in continuing education and training because we care about our patients and delivering the best outcomes possible. Ask us how we incorporate our continuing education and training into our dental services at your next visit. There’s so much we can do to help you have a healthy and beautiful smile. We look forward to seeing you soon.

What Is “Cosmetic Dentistry?”

You hear the term “cosmetic dentistry” a lot, but what does it really mean?

Cosmetic dentistry encompasses the dental techniques and procedures that create a more pleasing smile for you. Dentists who want to improve the skills they gained in dental school must look to special continuing education to achieve their goals. There currently is no advanced degree in cosmetic dentistry, so any general dentist can use the term “cosmetic dentist” to describe their work. There is one way to know that your dentist has the skills and experience to provide you the highest-quality treatment.

Dr. Britt Is an Accredited Member of the AACD

I am happy to tell you that I have put in many hours of post–dental school training in order to become highly skilled in cosmetic dentistry. I’ve also devoted many additional hours toward achieving accreditation with the AACD so that you and each of my other patients will have a way to confirm my skill in cosmetic dentistry. I will continue training for the rest of my career so I will always be able to offer you the best dentistry available.

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD)

The AACD was founded in 1984 and has become the largest and most trusted organization for cosmetic dentistry in the world. The members developed standards for cosmetic dentistry, and the organization is dedicated to responsible esthetics. There are now over 6,000 dental professional members in the AACD worldwide.

As I mentioned earlier, for a dentist to excel in cosmetic dentistry, he or she must pursue additional training after leaving dental school. Fortunately, there are education programs in cosmetic dentistry available that fulfill this need. The AACD has learning opportunities for its dentist members and offers accreditation to applicants who pass rigorous tests of their clinical skills, case presentations, and an oral exam. Gaining accreditation requires an investment of time that can take several years to accomplish. It is a rare achievement — there are no more than 350 accredited members of the AACD in the world, and I am happy to be one of them!

If you want to improve the appearance of your teeth and smile, or if you are having dental problems of any kind, please contact my office to schedule an appointment for a consultation.

All the best,
Dr. Britt

Restore Beauty and Health to Your Teeth With Dental Crowns

One of the most successful restorations we can provide is a dental “crown.” The team at Dentistry by Angela Britt can answer your questions about crowns. Customized for your unique teeth, your crown encloses the entire tooth. The shape, color, and even the size are designed to resemble your own teeth. Delivering an aesthetically pleasing crown that allows you to chew correctly in comfort requires time, patience, and skill. When done well, they will be visually attractive and your teeth will be healthier.

Types of Dental Crowns

Crowns are constructed from metals, including gold, stainless steel, and metal alloys. Other materials may be used with the metal, including porcelain, ceramic, and resin.

Metal crowns typically wear longer than other materials and don’t chip. Stainless steel crowns are prefabricated and are often used as temporaries to be replaced with the “permanent” crown when it is finished.

The porcelain in a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown can be matched to your existing teeth to provide a more natural appearance. Because the porcelain can wear from chewing and can also be chipped, they are not as long-lasting as a metal crown.

Crowns can also be completely ceramic. These crowns can look the most natural and are used for both back and front teeth.

When Crowns Might Be Used

Crowns are often the restoration of choice in many situations.

  • Teeth that have internal fractures can suffer from the pressure of chewing.  Placing a crown over such a tooth helps redistribute the pressure, perhaps preventing the need for additional procedures.
  • Large fillings put pressure on the weakened surrounding tooth structure. Replacing large restorations with a crown can help prevent the remaining tooth from cracking and requiring additional procedures.
  • Teeth become worn from chewing, and the worn cusps contribute to fractures. Covering the tooth with a crown can alleviate the pressure and prevent further damage.
  • Root canal procedures save your tooth from an extraction. We may suggest that a crown then be placed over the tooth to protect it from pressure cracks caused by vigorous chewing.
  • Crowns can provide a cover for your dental implant.
  • Teeth worn from grinding can be restored to look natural and more aesthetically pleasing.
  • Damage from accidental trauma or severe decay can be fixed through restorative crowns.
  • Crowns that are carefully made can compensate for gaps between teeth to provide a more beautiful smile.
  • Discolored and misshapen teeth can be restored to provide you with a natural, beautiful smile.

Crowns are one type of restoration available for creating your perfect smile. Deciding which restorations are the best for your unique situation requires a thorough understanding of your needs. Please call our office to schedule an appointment. We serve patients in Brunswick, Georgia, and the surrounding areas.

What You Need to Know About Porcelain Veneers

digital rendering of a porcelain veneer

Do you like the way your teeth look? Maybe you’ve been thinking about changing the appearance of your teeth. You’ve heard about porcelain veneers, but you don’t understand how they work or if they’ll work for you. The team at Dentistry by Angela Britt has the answers to your questions about porcelain veneers.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin pieces of porcelain designed to cover the front of your teeth, similar to the way artificial nails adhere to your fingertips. The veneers allow you to cover imperfections by changing the color, size, and shape of your teeth.

Conditions That Can Benefit From Porcelain Veneers
  • Stained or discolored teeth that can’t be whitened
  • Chipped, broken, or worn teeth
  • Abnormally shaped or uneven teeth
  • Slightly crooked teeth
  • Gapped teeth

Porcelain Veneer Process

Consultation — During the consultation appointment, you’ll receive an exam. The dentist reviews your x-rays, and we’ll possibly take impressions of your teeth. This visit is not a one-way street. You share with us the results you’re expecting to receive. We use all the information to assess your needs and to determine if veneers are the best fit for your situation. We’ll answer questions you have about the procedure, and the dentist will plan treatment if it’s the right choice for you.

Preparation — The dentist removes a small amount of enamel to prepare for placement of the veneers. Next, we take impressions to send to the laboratory along with the shade selection to make your veneers. In most cases, it can take two to four weeks for your case to return to the office.

Bonding — The dentist examines and makes adjustments to the veneers for a good fit and color match. Before bonding, your tooth needs to be cleaned, polished, and etched. The etch makes the surface of the tooth rough to prepare for cementation. The cement is applied to the veneer and carefully positioned on your tooth. We use a special light to harden the cement and then make the final adjustments.

In two weeks, you may need a follow-up visit so we can check your gums and the position of the veneers. When properly cared for, porcelain veneers can last seven to 15 years. As always, practice good oral hygiene by brushing twice daily and flossing once a day. To find out if veneers are right for you, call our office to schedule an appointment. We serve patients in Brunswick, Georgia, and the surrounding areas.

Invisalign Gives You Something to Smile About

blury pic of a woman smiling while holding invisalign aligners

Life gives us many great moments to celebrate, such as graduations, birthdays, and weddings. These occasions bring so much joy. Does your smile match the happiness you feel on the inside?

Do you hold back your real smile so no one will see your teeth? If you have crooked teeth or an improper bite, at Dentistry by Angela Britt, we can give you something to smile about with Invisalign.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a remarkable series of clear aligners created to straighten your teeth and correct some bite issues. The system uses 3D imaging technology to guide the movement of your teeth through the treatment stages. Before treatment begins, you get to take a peek at your new smile.

Your aligners are made just for you based on your orthodontic needs. Aligner sets get replaced in two-week intervals for most cases. Each pair of trays in the series causes a certain range of tooth movement.

You’ll come to visit us a few times during your treatment so that we can monitor your progress. Sometimes, you may wear a set of aligners for a shorter or longer period.

Benefits of Invisalign

  • Eat what you want
  • Look better
  • Better oral health
  • Less discomfort
  • More confidence

Maintaining Invisalign

Your Invisalign aligners are removable. Take them off to eat, drink, or care for your teeth. Because there are no brackets or wires, it’s easy to maintain good oral hygiene.

Brush and floss after meals. Carry your aligner case and a travel-size kit with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss with you when you’re away from home.

Rinse your aligners when you remove them. You can clean them with clear antibacterial soap. Soak aligners in Invisalign cleaning solution or a denture cleaner each day for approximately 15 minutes.

Wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day for the best results. Call our office to schedule a consultation to find out if Invisalign is right for you. We serve patients in Brunswick, Georgia, and the surrounding communities.

Have You Completed a Smile Analysis?

How do you feel about your smile? Are you happy with the color of your teeth? Are you okay with their shape and placement? Are you missing teeth but haven’t placed a priority on restorative options? Whatever the case may be, there is one thing you can do to increase your chances of having the smile of your dreams. It won’t take much time, it can be done in the comfort of your own home (or office, or café, etc.), and it can change your perception of what a smile is worth. What is it and how can you get started?

Our Smile Analysis is the perfect first step to get you on the road to having your perfect grin. Sometimes, we’re unaware of how much we think about our smiles until we’re forced to bring the subconscious to the forefront of our minds. For example, do you cover your mouth when you laugh? Have you thought about why or which occasions you’re most likely to do so? These are the types of questions that are addressed through our Smile Analysis.

The truth is, I can’t think of a single dental imperfection that cannot be corrected through dentistry. From the purely cosmetic concerns to the conditions that are detrimental to your health, there is a solution. The only way for me to determine which treatment plan is best is by discussing the results of your Smile Analysis with you.

If there is anything you don’t like about your smile, what are you waiting for? Why spend another day, month, or year dreading social events and photo opportunities when you can take control of your smile and your confidence by completing a Smile Analysis. When you’re ready to take the next step, I’ll be right here waiting.

Best,

Dr. Britt

The Perfect Solution For Perfect Teeth

cartoon yellow tooth drinking coffee, thinking about being cleaner

All too often, we settle for less. Whether it’s not returning a poorly cooked meal or settling for a substandard flooring installation, we don’t want to inconvenience others, don’t want to appear too demanding, or simply don’t have the energy for the fight. The thing is, you deserve the best, especially when it comes to your smile. And when it comes to correcting smile imperfections, I’ve got the perfect option in mind. What could I possibly be referring to?  Veneers!

What Can Veneers Do?

Porcelain veneers are a conservative, yet permanent, way to correct many of the most common tooth “troubles” including:

  • Chipped, cracked, or pitted teeth
  • Stained teeth that don’t respond to whitening
  • Misaligned or gapped teeth
  • Misshapen teeth, such as teeth that are too rounded, short, or squared

What To Expect

Placement of veneers does not involve surgery, making it a conservative option for anyone who wants to perfect their smile. If you and I agree that veneers are right for you, you can expect the following:

  1. We’ll discuss the desired outcome so I can have a clear image of the smile you’re visualizing.
  2. I’ll prepare your teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel and then take an impression so your veneers can be perfectly placed.
  3. Your veneers will be made of durable, stain-resistant porcelain. The porcelain we use has just the right amount of translucence, making it look more natural.
  4. When your veneers are ready, you’ll visit me again to have them placed. I will apply a layer of adhesive material in order to permanently bond your veneers to your natural teeth.

The only way to find out if you’re a candidate for porcelain veneers is to come in for a consultation. Why should you consider veneers? Because you don’t have to settle for less when it comes to your teeth; you deserve the confidence that comes with a gorgeous smile.

I look forward to seeing you!

Transform Your Smile in a Flash With Whitening

smiling mouth with white teeth

At Dentistry by Angela Britt, there are a number of ways we can improve your smile. From porcelain veneers to full-mouth rejuvenations, the possibilities are endless. If you’re looking for a way to transform your smile quickly, though, nothing beats whitening.

Why Your Teeth Aren’t White

A number of factors contribute to less-than-gleaming teeth, including:

  • Eating and drinking highly pigmented foods, such as curry, mustard, red wine, coffee, and tea
  • Smoking or using other tobacco products
  • Some medications, such as antibiotics
  • The natural aging process

Regardless of the reason, we can help by providing you with two convenient options to restore your smile to the brightest white.

The Zoom! Whitening System

Our patients love the Zoom! whitening system for good reason: it’s effective. Better yet, it’s fast, affordable, and convenient. Depending on your whitening goals, time constraints, and lifestyle, you may choose from the two options we offer in our office:

  • In-Office Whitening — If you want results quickly, in-office whitening is your best option. In under an hour, your teeth can become up to eight shades whiter, all while you sit in the comfort of one of our treatment suites. After your gums and lips are protected, a professional grade whitening gel will be applied to the visible surfaces of your teeth. The gel is then activated by a light, allowing it to deeply penetrate your enamel and give you the bright smile you’ve always wanted.
  • At-Home Whitening — If you’ve got time and prefer to whiten in the comfort of your own home, Zoom! is available in a take-home version, as well. After your customized whitening trays are created, you’ll be sent home with professional grade whitening gel and directions about how much gel to use, how long to keep the gel on your teeth, and how often you should whiten.

The KöR Whitening Deep Bleaching System

If your teeth don’t respond well to our Zoom! system, then we offer KöR Deep Bleaching. KöR can brighten the most stubborn stains with less sensitivity than would be expected from such a potent product. Like the Zoom! at-home whitening system, KöR uses whitening trays that are designed to keep your saliva from diluting the whitening solution. The result? Even patients who have whitening-resistant teeth can enjoy a gleaming smile.

If you live near the Brunswick, Georgia area and would like to learn more about how to whiten your smile, contact our office to schedule a consultation. Bright, sparkling teeth are just a phone call away.

Get a Glamorous Smile with Cosmetic Dentistry

teeth biting a pearl necklace

One of our favorite things at Dentistry by Angela Britt is seeing our patients smile. From the smile they greet us with when they come through our doors to the one they share when they’re thrilled with the results of a new treatment, we just can’t get enough. If a cosmetic imperfection is preventing you from sharing your smile with the world, we are proud to offer multiple cosmetic dentistry solutions to give you the smile of your dreams. Here are just a few of the treatments that have delighted our patients:

Whitening

There are many factors that lead to discolored teeth. Highly pigmented foods (like berries and mustard) and drinks (such as coffee, tea, and red wine) are just the beginning. Medications and age can dull your smile, as well. The good news is that you don’t have to live with dingy teeth. Dr. Britt offers both in-office and at-home whitening treatments to help you achieve that Hollywood-white smile. Whatever your treatment goal and lifestyle, we can find a whitening option that will work for you.

Veneers

Do you have a chipped tooth? Do you feel like your teeth are too round? Too squared? Veneers are an ideal solution to these problems and others. Veneers are thin porcelain shells that are cemented to the front surface of your teeth. They can correct chips and cracks, the shape or length of your teeth, even discolorations. Not only are they a conservative cosmetic option, they also provide added strength to your natural teeth.

Invisalign

Few adults remember braces fondly; the brackets, wires, bands, and headgear were the stuff of adolescent nightmares. The good news is that Dr. Britt offers Invisalign to her patients who desire straight teeth without the metal works of traditional braces. Invisalign uses a series of nearly invisible plastic aligner trays to gently move the teeth into the desired position. The aligner trays are removed for meals, which means no eating restrictions. They are also removed for teeth cleaning, which means no floss threaders or proxy brushes to keep your mouth sparkling. Best of all, Invisalign treatment typically takes less time than traditional orthodontics, which means you get to enjoy having straight teeth sooner.

We are proud to offer these treatments and others to our patients in Brunswick and the surrounding areas. If you are interested in learning more about our cosmetic dentistry options, contact Dentistry by Angela Britt today to schedule an appointment.
